Chapter Twelve

West Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, UK

30th of December, 2:30 a.m. (GMT)

“Are you ready?” Wilson asked Martinez as she cracked open the door of her room.

“As ready as I’ll ever be,” she answered nervously. She was dressed in her darkest clothes, but not completely black, as were Wilson’s. They were both armed, having retrieved and reassembled their weapons from the secret compartments in their luggage.

He flashed a brief humorless smile and tilted his head toward his door. “Welcome to the life of a spy.” They carefully made their way out of the Bell, Book, and Candle via his window. The clouds of earlier had passed and they walked silently, single file in the cold light of the full moon. The moon was bright enough to cast shadows, and Wilson’s moon-shadow was humpbacked from the backpack he wore. The temperature continued to drop to the point of frost and the rare step would elicit a small crunch whenever one of them trod upon an invisible thin crust of newly forming ice.

They made their way to Hindon House, taking the route previously scouted out in the after-dinner constitutional taken earlier in the evening. It was time to go off-book and give the old house a “thorough metaphysical look-see,” a phrase Martinez would have never expected Wilson to use. Unbeknownst to Martinez at the time, Wilson had taken the liberty of carefully disabling the lock and alarm on a narrow bathroom window when he used the facilities during their interview of the cook and housekeeper.

Although armed, Wilson stressed this was a no engagement situation for her unless her she believed her life depended upon it. She was instructed to flee at the first sign of detection and rendezvous at a small park nearby if she thought it unwise to immediately return to the hotel. At Wilson’s suggestion, she spent the time after dinner digitally walking the local area using satellite maps and ground-level imaging readily available on the internet. “The images may be out of date, but in a smaller place such as this, it’s likely that not much has changed since they were taken, so familiarize yourself with where to run and where to hide if neither the park nor the inn is possible,” he reasoned. It was the first time she’d intentionally digitally reconnoitered a target, and she started to understand why some nations weren’t keen on having that data readily available.

They approached the manor from the nearby copse of ash trees, treading carefully and slowly under the dim branches. A few dark leaves refused to surrender their hold to the branches, casting mottled moon-shadows on the ground. They paused on the edge of the grove, watching the manor for a good ten minutes before moving toward the unlocked and disarmed bathroom window.

With a quick rush, they were across the lawn and up and over into the bathroom. They clicked on their small lights and crept to the front door and the security panel. Wilson pulled out his phone and tapped a few buttons.
